Why Homestead Students Take This Course

Homestead students have the range essentially in their back yard, which changes the calculus on a first class: there is no hour-long drive to talk yourself out of. If you have been meaning to do this for a year, the barrier is smaller here than anywhere else in the county.

Homestead is where the Homestead Training Center is — the outdoor range we hold our live-fire courses at — which means students here have essentially no drive at all to the training the rest of the county travels for.

South Dade is also its own environment — agricultural, spread out, with long response times in the parts furthest from town. That is precisely the situation our mission statement describes: when the police are minutes away, you are the first line of defense.

What the Course Covers

  • The four universal safety rules, enforced from minute one
  • How a firearm actually works, and how to load and unload it
  • Clearing a malfunction
  • Grip, stance, sight alignment, sight picture
  • Trigger control — the skill that separates good shooters from the rest
  • Dry practice until the motions stop requiring thought
  • Live fire, close and slow, accuracy before speed

Where and When

Homestead Training Center · 4 hours (1 PM – 5 PM).

The range is right here in Homestead, which means local students can train often rather than once a year — and frequency is what actually builds skill.

We train outdoors deliberately. An outdoor range lets us teach drawing from a holster, moving between positions, shooting from behind cover, and working after dark — almost no indoor range in Miami-Dade permits any of it. More about the range.

Bring your own firearm and ammunition — we do not rent firearms. If you have not bought one yet, call before you book and we will talk through what to look for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do Homestead students take first-time shooter class?

How much is first-time shooter class near Homestead?
$175 per person. Call 786-314-0471 for the next available date.
I have never touched a gun. Is this really for me?
Yes. The course assumes zero prior knowledge and no live ammunition is present until the second half of the class. You do need to bring your own firearm and ammunition.
Does shooting a gun hurt?
No. Recoil from a standard handgun is a firm push rather than pain. Most first-time shooters are surprised by how manageable it is.
What if I panic and want to stop?
You set the firearm down on the bench pointed downrange and step back. That is a completely acceptable outcome and nobody makes an issue of it.
Do I need my own firearm?
Yes. Every student brings their own firearm and ammunition — we do not rent firearms. If you have not bought one yet, call before you book and we will talk through what to look for.
